U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visits SU & SU Ag Center

Baton Rouge, La. – United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack visited the Southern University Baton Rouge and Southern University Ag Center campuses on February 14, 2023, as part of his HBCU tour.

During the tour, Secretary Vilsack met with Southern University Ag Center and College of Ag Chancellor-Dean Dr. Orlando F. McMeans, Southern University President-Chancellor Dennis J. Shields, Southern University Board of Supervisors Chair Myron K. Lawson, and another high-ranking official. Vilsack also spoke with Southern’s 1890 Student Scholars.

Vilsack also addressed a group of Southern University officials, Congressman Troy Carter, local and state elected officials, and USDA Senior Advisor for Racial Equity, Dr. Dwayne Goldmon during a briefing presentation that was moderated by Southern University Ag majors Kennedy Orr and Ian Washington.

Following the presentation, Vilsack meet with small business owners and participated in a press conference with Congressman Troy Carter, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, and SBA Administrator Isabella Guzman.

Vilsack concluded his tour by speaking with farmers from around the state at the Southern University Ag Center’s Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena Multi-purpose Building.
