SU Agricultural Science Students Engage in Experiential Research at Johnson C. Smith University

Baton Rouge, La. – Applications for the Johnson C. Smith University – Summer Sustainability Science Camp are now open. SU College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences undergraduate agricultural students Kayla Wiley and recent graduate Brenton Pitt were selected in the Summer of 2022 by the Center for Renewable Energy & Sustainability to engage in stakeholder empowerment through watershed and ecosystem service explorations.

The students participated in roundtable discussions at the intersection of land, poverty, and cultural identity, focusing on agricultural areas within the Southeastern United States, and participated in week-long field trips along the Eastern Continental Divide.

“The internship that I attended last summer was great,” said Wiley. “We learned how to conduct water tests and sampling, went snorkeling for some aquatic life, fish seine, beekeeping, salamander searching and bird watching. We got to also venture into the different towns in the highlands and South Carolina. It was a great experience and I hope others can enjoy it too,” she added.

This newly hybrid experiential internship is now accepting Summer 2023 undergraduate applicants for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in environmentally related STEM or public policy disciplines. Students can click here to apply.
